For b&g I prefer a mid stroke machine that can put solid color in but you can also do soft, wispy shading. Since black and gray is “softer”, I go with a bigger but looser curved and woven Mag, used sort of like a paint brush. I totally agree with voodoo on both books. Both are must haves.
Tattoo Machines and their Secrets is $100.00 but well worth the knowledge

I highly recommend FK Irons. They are everything that they promise to be and more. I have been honored to own some great machines but now all I use for color packing is my FK Zen 1.5 shader. I plan to buy 2 more machines from him, maybe three. Definitely a liner and maybe a cutback liner and soft (black and grey) shader.
