thankyou :) that should help me out alot. i was doing a tattoo on myself and was shading with a 7flat mag and you can see each needle hole if you look real close, and was finding it hard to get it smooth. but i’m going to give the larger mag a try. thanks hugely :)

really like your work, what do you use to get that shading so smooth?

i’m a bit stuck on the wire with this one, growing up in the UK nothing much bothers me (apart from peodphiles). i’m not sure if i would or would’nt tattoo the mentioned request from a customer? as already mentioned if the person is sick enough to want such tattoo’s your not going to stop them, and they will find a tattooist that will do it; so i guess it just depends on if you wanted to cash in on it or not.???? :/

Yea that’s the biggest hurdle. I’m only feeling more comfortable now, still get a little nervous with every tat but not nearly as much as I did in the beginning. How many have you done in skin. A good machine is necessary too. What do you have?

i’ve now done 22 skin tattoo’s, the star was like my 11th, i do have a micky sharpz style coil machine but not got that one balanced yet, but i’ve been using a microfly rotary which is so much better, it lines and shades really well and is nice to use :)

      check out carpel tunnel syndrome

If it’s carpel tunnel syndrome, your first two fingers. the inside of your thumb, and half of you ring fonger will go numb.
Sounds weird, but trust me, I’ve already had the surgery on both hands. Depending on the severity, you’ll lose about 1/3
of the grip strength in you hand. I have been wanting to learn tattooing for a long time, but I had to wait until I got my
wrists fixed before I could start. Good luck!!

that sucks, really hope you get your grip and strength back; will a large grip on a machine not help you? carpel tunnel can manifest in a few ways, i first came across it a few years ago and a nail technician had to give up work as she damaged the nerve and suffered shakes from the wrist, numbness like you said is also another symptom. good luck mate hope you get sorted :)

Thanks guys. The thicker line would have been much better. I’m thinking this picture doesn’t show the shading well, because it sure looked good when I was doing it. Went in smooth and gradients ended up where I wanted them. I kept it real light…didn’t want much black in the piece.

Been at it just over a year, I guess.

i know so many tattooist that take pictures of their work and it never looks as good as its does when you see it properly, thats from the professionals to the novice. its also hard to make a tattoo better when the client wants it a certain way and won’t allow you to change it for the better. great work keep it going :)

I’m going to have to jump on the bandwagon and say the hair is the weak part of this one. If you went darker, and EVENED the shading out so it creates a highlighted line rather than all over it would pay dividends. Maybe a little shading in the flower…it looks real painted on.

I like the piece and I think it’s all an easy fix.

      Mark

thankyou :) i have left it basic as it was getting real sore and it’s on my deformed damaged leg, so the sensation’s were getting too much (shooting pains into foot and hip due to severe nerve damage). i wanted to darker the hair but i could’nt stand it to keep going, theres definatly a few more bits i want to go back and do, but i have to wait until my leg is having a good day which is few and far between. it’s not finished by far but when i started it i only intended on getting lined but i got carried away lol

not sure if my input’s worth anything here, but my pro trainer uses a micky sharpz hybrid it’s £119 but solid machine that works really well, she lines and shades perfectly with it and never changes any power settings to change over. i love using it but i struggle with the weight of that and a big 30mm grip she sets it with :) but it definatly sit’s up there with the big pro machines at £500!

I agree with viper that was one i liked. I am iffy on the star bit seems he sees wjat i see so. Keep going good stuff there.

i agree the star was’nt great, i really struggled with my machine as it was’nt balanced and no one had taught me about balanced machines and how they affect your lining. i did stop early on and tell the guy i was’nt happy and i was struggling, and offered him to come back after i had worked out what was going wrong. but he told me to continue and reminded me im training. i was mainly pleased with the shading on this one as it came out grainy like the guy wanted and i used my own custom made grey shades which i was megally pleased with :), hence why i chose to post this one but it also shows how an unbalanced machine will affect your work.
i love all the feedback im getting, it’s really helped me improve. there is an english forum that is awful!!!! it’s called tatscratchers, it’s supposed to be for all tattooist to get help advise etc but no matter how good your work is they slate it so bad, i’ve never come across a bunch of such horrid bullies in all my life!! yet they rate someone who photoshopped an image over a tattoo to make out they had covered it and they congratulated the guy??? honestly if you want to feel sick to your stomach read what they say about peoples work, it should be shut down and the bullies should be put in court for their vicious nasty words

Looking good :) My suggestion for the hair, would be to study how hair is done in traditional Japanese tattoos, and use that style to bolden and darken the hair :)

:) i do want to go and darken the hair but i was getting too sore lol and back was aching bending over doing my thigh. overall id like to darken the hair, pop a better tip on the nose, straighten the jaw line, put eyelashes in, pattern the dress and when im much better id like to tattoo her arm and shoulder :) but all in time. i only intended on getting the outline done when i first started on this one but got carried away
