Like everything else on the tattoo machine, experiment and
play around to find out what works best for your style and your
specific machine. Some artists will claim that a certain metal
will increase the machine’s efficiency; others will tell you that it
makes no difference.
One note to keep in the back of your mind is that if your contact
point is really spitting out a lot of spark, you may have an issue
in your machine somewhere. It could be a bad capacitor, or too
much voltage among other things. Keep an eye on your contact
point, it will have to be adjusted as it wears down in order to
maintain consistent tuning. You can also change the way your
machine drastically runs just by increasing the length on the
contact point by screwing it up or down towards the front spring.
