Just wondering what the difference was between a cut-back machine and a typical machine was… Any difference in performance?

Cutback machines are cutback on the frame at the front binding post, allowing it to be adjusted to bring the contact screw further back. This will cause the machine to run faster and hit a lil harder, and u usually have to get cutback front springs, or cut your own. Usually this is a one pass liner setup.

So would u think it would be a good type of machine during an apprenticeship?

i think so bc you tend to move your hand faster at first, bc when u watch a tattoo, it looks so fluid and quick. This way, u will have a faster machine that will be able to be adjusted to your hand speed. just be careful, bc those things can become razorblades if ur not careful enough!

Back “in the day” it was a quick fix to speed up the machine by moving the contact screw. Now you can actually have a slow or fast / hard or soft cutback.

Geometry guidelines of the builder usually suggest that cutback is supposed to run faster though.
