I already had the sketch done, but I added shading just now. Obviously not based on anything lol just out of my head

its hard to see a real clear shading definition in that
what are you using? -

#2 Pencil and Rubbing the paper with my finger to spread the shade out

maybe try making it a little darker :3

When you do drawings like this, and you want to get as close to the real thing as humanly possible. Try not to smudge with your fingers. Use your pencils in a lighter way.
Remember you cant smudge a tattoo with your fingers ;)
And maybe its just me, but when I draw, I never touch the paper with my fingers. I very rare occasions, I use a paper stub. (Thats proberbly cause I use charcoal as a medium, and charcoal dust in a fingerprint? Then start all over, the drawing is ruined) -

I agree with Lenn. That is why I use a selection of pencils. The 2H is a great light pencils to help you “map out” where you need shadows and start the shading process. I love the HB because it is the one I use most for making the outline. I go in darker with 2B-4B where I have definitions and only use 6B if there is a super dark spot that the others can’t manage. Sometimes it will take a long time, but it always looks better when you use even strokes and consistency to make one shadow at a time.

I’ve never used anything other than a plain number 2 pencil. Maybe it is time

I use everything from 4H to 8B ^^;

Kind of off topic but I like how we’ve made it to page 2 already and I’ve only posted one picture which doesn’t even count towards the lesson lol

Meh. I still haven’t managed to go to the store and get those fancy pencils ;)
This is my first ever Koi, done with a #2. I think it looks so awesome, if I were more into Japanese culture I would get this done on my back. My only regret is that I ran out of paper and couldn’t finish the tail :(
-
August 24, 2013 at 7:01 am #25135RamenuzumakiParticipant
looks good dude. theres a ton more detail, and shading values you can pop in there :3
I don’t have any of my work that’s just with an HB2 online anymore or I’d show you some examples ^^;
To get your DARK shading push REALLY hard to get the pencil to go as dark as possible and simply do a whipping motion as you shade. that will give you your gradient while doing your shades :3 -
August 24, 2013 at 11:34 am #25136InfamousParticipant
Thanks ;) And I will definitely do that
-
August 24, 2013 at 2:25 pm #25137JDawnPearlsMember
you can still achieve similar shading effects with the regular pencil. Its just about how it interacts with the paper, i.e. hard pressure vs light pressure. You really want each scale to have a little bit of both, it helps it look more round and interesting. The best place on a Koi to practice gradient is the fin. The places that are narrow are darker, the spread out fin is lighter… etc. etc. Good lines!

Thanks :D I was really trying to focus on not getting a lot of sketch marks on this :) And I plan on re-submitting this for the next lesson, but more complete
-

Its a solid backbone of a drawing.
But me have to agree, you can do alot more shading to this fishy. ;) You can really do tons of shadings with a regular HB pencil. Even stretch it as far as saying; you can do about 50 shades of grey here :P hahaha ahhh I know, cheap shot. Sorry, I just woke up ;) -

Infamous, I found this website a looong time ago when I was trying to find free drawing lessons (hey, don’t judge… I’m broke  ). There’s LOTS of stuff on it, and it has been super helpful. http://www.drawspace.com/lessons
If you’re often like me and strapped for cash, I would be happy to mail you some different pencils and stuff. Let’s just say my husband often bitches about my obsession with art supplies ;) (considering I seem to have accumulated a small arsenal that has collected quite a bit of dust since I started college). Aaaaand not to mention I can always pick up extra stuff at the college store dirt cheap (I don’t allow myself to go in there unsupervised anymore  ). -

I honestly think this is a good start, but it looks a bit rushed. Take your time. Lay out your idea lightly, then figure out where your light source is coming from… like clock positioning (1:00, 10:00, etc.) There are 6 basic types of light: highlight: the brightest part where the light hits the object(s) directly; light (or halftone): the overall shade of the object(s); shadow: where the light begins to bend around the object; core shadow: the darkest part of the object(s); reflected light: the light that bounces off of the ground or other objects; and cast shadow: the shadow that the object itself makes.
This may help… http://www.drawspace.com/lessons/view/b11
And so may this (there are 8 types of light in this video)… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aWkdyQDsTY
I am cleaning out my “office” and gathering some supplies to send you. I have a few books that I found to be really helpful. Unfortunately, I haven’t found any H pencils to include (yet ;) ), but I do have a range of B pencils. I will try to get them out soon, but I’d like to finish cleaning first so I can include anything that I find helpful. -

The most important thing to remember is that the gradient changes constantly depending on your source(s) and that is why taking your time and adjusting regularly to compensate for the light source is so important. That takes time. Even just shading a block or a ball, they take time. The toughest one I did was an egg.

I know right? I love the perspective and the look of the wood grain. She did an amazing job with it.
Agreed Jess. My first semester drawing class, we had to draw eggs for homework. It usually took me about 3-5 hours, depending on how many eggs we had to draw. :? I didn’t want to look at another egg until the next semester lol.

Ugh. Apparently I really suck at shading lol, I’m beginning to really hate this lesson, looking forward to the next one though.
I’m gonna give that drawspace thing a read through and see what else I can do. And yes, I definitely did not spend 3-5 hours on this, not even close, maybe like 15 minutes.
-
September 2, 2013 at 6:00 pm #25153JDawnPearlsMember
Usually if I want to do well, and depending on the size .. an hour is the minimum I spend on shading. Its patience game at times. (Especially since I have an arm with tendinitis, I have to learn to relax and shade at the same time… so weird)… Also, what sucks for me when I start to lose my patience is I want to quickly get it done, but that is really the time you step back for a couple of minutes to re-group. Then return with a fresh eye. Rushing to the “end” never really does the same as just taking a break. Good Luck!

Ok, now I’m going to be a bit harsh… but constructively :) STOP doing that. Don’t tell me that something sucks, FIX IT. No one wants to hear how bad it is… we want to hear what you started with, and what you did to improve it. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS think craftsmanship. I should not be able to see his skull running through his brow bone. Where is your light source coming from? Upper right? Then show me no less than THREE shades. I still feel like you’re rushing… getting frustrated and calling it “good enough”. Stop it. Spend 15-20 mins, take a break, come back to it. Make your lights lighter, and your darks darker. Try practicing by setting up your own still life, and draw what you see. I think we should sentence you to egg-practice with charcoal… what do you think Jess? ;)
