Canvas, I know I said it in another post, but the book is the best one out there. I learned more from that book than all others combined. I look forward to your next book!
Thanks for caring about us “noobs”

Hey Rob! man, that really sucks about shops in Aus. I am looking for an apprenticeship, and have been disappointed about not finding one. Your post just goes to show, that things could always be worse! Sorry to hear about your problem man….hang in there!

Hey!
Thanks for the reply! Yes,I have a copy. Super informative! Seriously one of the best books I have read on tattooing, and I have read alot.
I am in Mesa,AZ. Originally from a small town in central IL, but i’ve been here in AZ. for 15yrs,so I definatly call AZ home. :D
Can’t wait till u get back here. would like to make appt. to get some work done. Maybe learn some skills by watching you work! :D (and maybe ask some questions,if it wouldn’t be considered too out of line….)
Meanwhile, stay safe! again thanks for the reply! -

Matt,
I do agree with what you said in your post. I do believe in every persons right to self expression, and there are alot of people out there that make it hard to get into this. They believe that if you haven’t had an apprenticeship…well, then you are not a “real” tattoo artist. that is straight bull#$%^!!! My husband has many tattoos that he got in prison, some of which I would put up against the best professional artists work. Not only were they done without an autoclave, I wont even go into what they used for ink!!
Your advice is right on! Alot of great artists never had an apprenticeship, and I am sure alot of so-so artists did. I do want one, but if I can’t find one, is it gonna stop me-no! I,too, do work on myself (and my husband-God bless him!!!!) and will continue to. Even tho it is not the same, I have also practiced on the “fake skin” and pig-skin.
With all the disposable tips, tubes, grips and plastic covers out now, I don’t think having an autoclave is a necessity. No one starts out an expert, and I agree with what you said about you shouldn’t expect others to be impressed with your work until you are.
There are alot of judgemental people out there, and I have noticed that the old saying…opinions are like #%%holes-everybody has one, seems to apply in this field/art alot. I figure, the more people I see tattoo, and the more I practice tattooing, I will develop my own style, my own thoughts on the way I want to do it. Great post dude.Peace, cilla

Matt,
True, #@&^% happens. Even the best nurse can break a sterile field. Do people die? Usually not……but how many times have you heard of someone going into the hospital with one thing, then the next thing you know-they have a “hospital based” infection. From what I have experienced and read, I dont think i am getting too caught up in the universal precautions thing. It is not a hard concept, you just have to get used to doing it. I have not apprenticed with anyone in a shop yet, so I am sure I will learn alot about the way to do things…and probably the way not to do things.
Above all else, I don’t want to ever cause someone to have an infection/illness and I don’t want to get one. That is what I believe. Would I ever tell someone who is trying to teach me to tattoo “OHHHH NOOOOOO!!!!! you just broke your field. You gotta start over with a fresh set up”-absolutely not. When i first got out of nursing school, i learned that the ideal way to do things was not always the way things were really done. I didn’t mean to come across as anal retentive on the subject, because I am not. I know universal precautions, but I am learning how to tattoo. Hopefully one day, when I am on my own, I will be able to combine the 2, so that no one ever has to suffer with something that I could have prevented. As you know, it isn’t hard to use them, you just gotta get used to it.
Thanks for the reply. I didn’t mean to sound sanctimonious, and apologize if I did.Peace, Cilla

That is awful, and could have been really dangerous, but you told it in such an amusing way I had to laugh! It reminded me of this guy my husband had been in prison with. He wasn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer, but was nice in his own way. He was young, and really wanted to get sleeved out while in. He would let literally anyone tattoo on him. Anyone starting out and wanted to practice would call this guy over and he would take anything anyone wanted to sling on him. And,although I have seen some great prison tattoos, the ones he had were not! You would have thought that he had the MonaLisa on him tho,by the way he talked. He was so damn proud of those tattoos! Luckily he has (so-far!) escaped any diseases or infections. Anyway, thanks for sharing! Takecare!
