Thanks. I had the before and after side by side on the screen here and felt pretty good about it. I guess I can be taught. :) I appreciate the input on the design…I think the white is going to be a nice touch when it all heals up.
I’ll try to run softer and be patient for a few runs to see what happens.
No worries, it looks…[Read more]

Thanks! Yea did 4 on some practice skin. Real skin is way easier than that rubber crap lol. I think my 10 year airbrushing career has helped a lot with color mixing and shading. Nothing like starting out with an easy one huh? LOL being sarcastic

This afternoon I decided to fix my cover up. I used some of Kitchen Wizard’s ideas. Thanks, man.
I reworked all lines with a 14R liner and used a 7 mag for the color. Wish I had a 15 mag…would have been so much easier. I need to do some needle/tube shopping I guess. White was put in with a liner right next to the inner ring and…

Had you been using a machine on practice materials first? For as first tattoo, that’s awesome work :)

My advice is to ignore the fact that it’s meant to be a face… Treat it purely as black and white/shades of grey values, and just take your time over it :) One tip I’ve heard, is to not put out 100% black right until the end of the process. That way, you’re laying down grey washes and building up the shades, and then come back in at the end to…[Read more]

Bend the bar, but not too much to where it rub the inner tube. I also bend my needle config from the solder point a tad. Barely enough to add to the bend so I can get my sweet spot on my setup. So aside from bending my bar I bend my needle grouping at the solder point. I dont recommend this unless it works for you. just what I…

the veins were an afterthought to try and clear up some space…this is just the rough draft. If it were tattooed on they would probably be buried under the “skin” of the heart with some shading to show depth…I’m not going to do the tattooing on this one. I’m just not there yet. :)
I like the idea of using shading to show the…[Read more]

I was actually thinking more about the unfortunate skank that had the tattoos done, as he wasn’t rubbered up… One of the tattoos was a star right on her anus :o

That’s not bad :) With regards the veins on the heart, I would suggest drawing them on with a Sharpie, then drawing round the edges, to get a really consistent width to them :)

When you say ‘shade’, I am guessing that you mean a lighter application of color, rather than blending one color into another? If you mean lighter application, I would suggest watering down the colored ink as you would water down black to make greywash :) I find that my color packer acts very much like a shading machine, with very minimal ink…[Read more]

I would really jump at the chance of an apprenticeship, and will not rule it out. I have often thought how terriffic working in a shop would be. At my age (67), the chances of that happening are on par with being part of the crew on the first mission to Mars. If it happens that I find an…

I am going to have to disagree on tattooing being a lifestyle. Tattooing is art and art for many is a hobby. I’m one of those many. The only difference between me and the recreational painter or sculptor is that I have chosen to move beyond paints and pencils and try my hand at using flesh as canvas. And just like the first time I…

Nice and a decent size too. I’m a fan of free hand work, so good job there! Was there a reason you didnt use different shades of green for the fine to show depth or a perception of roundness to the vine? The more shading you add to the petals and vines it will look krazy kewl and realistic.
Aside from this…I like the size,… -

Some A-bars on tattoo machines are bit larger on the nipple than others. Using paper – all you have to do is rip a small piece of paper towel and fold it – usually 2 folds works – but sometimes I will use 3 or 4 folds.

I look at it this way… Not many studio artists, unless they are actually friends with their client (and by friends, I mean have BBQs and go drinking and fishing with each other, not just act like friends in the studio to keep the $$s flowing) will even dream of letting a client touch the equipment to tattoo themselves, and *that* is what it…[Read more]

I’ll counter that, by saying drop your pants and tattoo your own thighs. Practice skins and oranges just aren’t the same, and you might as well learn on the medium you will be working on right from the beginning… And don’t sweat about getting an apprenticeship. It’s not rocket science to teach yourself to tattoo, and you don’t need to get…[Read more]
