Membersomething that might help you out is to use tracing paper and draw either the left or right of half of the anchor. then fold the tracing paper and copy the other side. that way you get a nice symmetrical design. after that you can piece in the rose and banner. it might also help making the heart at the top even too.

MemberAh that stinks~ Some of the artists I work with said that they have traveled close to an hour every day for their apprenticeships… which is insane haha. I’d love to see some of your work! There’s an original flash section on here that I think is appropriate for that. There are some publications and books that I’ve found with a lot of great info about machines and how they work. Let me search the forum a little bit to see if there is a tread for that already :)

MemberI gotcha. Time is definitely a factor haha. I do want to point out that most artists prefer having a clean slate as far as apprentices. My mentor puts alot of emphasis on the art of tattoos so he’s been very helpful in teaching me composition that would be appropriate for tattoos. I’m an artist first who is stepping into the tattoo world, and I’ve found that just being able to draw is not nearly enough. I mean that in the sense that drawing something that looks good on a flat surface may not work as a successful tattoo design. These are things that a mentor could teach you. My suggestion is just start by going and hanging out at your local shops. Don’t mention apprenticing or anything. Just spend time there, meet whoever you can, draw while you’re there, etc. At the very least it will get you used to the environment that you’re hoping to have a career in.

MemberDefinitely research the type of things you want to draw. And I cannot stress this enough….. REFERENCES. Google is your best friend. Also research the giants in the industry and feel free to try and copy their designs for practice. Look for how the set up the composition, colors, shading, etc.
Pretty much, you need to practice and study a whole lot.

MemberHi Neal
I’m Jess. I recently joined here too. I’m from the east coast and am trying to reach out to apprentices from all over. I know in your post you said you just bought a kit. Is there a reason you haven’t gone to any shops to try and earn a place there?

MemberAnything copic will be very pricey and they’re usually used by professional artists.
I’ve found that Prismacolor is amazing. Their pens and markers last a good while and tracing paper doesn’t suck all the ink out of them. The sizes that seem most popular .005, 03, and 05. But that’s really just personal preference.
As far as the colored pencils go, I’d suggest Prismacolor ColorSoft. They are (obviously) softer which makes blending colors into each other much easier and smoother. Most of the tattoo artists I talk to use these.
Hope this helps a little :)

MemberOh good :) Thanks for the feedback! I’m often concerned about how close the lines get to each other. I don’t want them to bleed out too much later on

MemberThanks so much~ This site is great because I don’t really have anyone else I know that is going through an apprenticeship currently. I’m planning on picking the brains of the tattoo artists I work with so see what their apprenticeships were like. I will definitely be frequenting this forum :)
