Any one here do grey washes?
I make my own washes from Kuro sumi. I dont get to use washes a lot. I was taught to to layout 3-5 little cups 1 drop, 2 drops, 3 drops and so on, filled with distilled water. The few times I used them they came out good. My concern is: Can I use the same method for portraits? Because i mostly tattoo letters my gradients are usually short (not alot of tones or gradients). I just whip down or up. And then fine tune with another pass (to make it darker). I dont use circles technique for my letters, its too dark.
I been asked to do a “CHARRA” which means like cowgirl. You might seen them in Gangster tattoo, they are the ones with the big sombreros. Its alot of light shading.
This will be my first full grey wash tattoo. I know I can do it but is there anyone who have done portraits and could give some suggestions, please?
for example, needles groups, light shading techniques.thanks.

I also work fulltime, plus the hour bus ride. I rather tattoo all day and get to play with my kids than work for someone else doing something I dont like. Gotta work at a tat shop to learn how to run a shop.
Heres one from last week.

Good use of complimentary colors on your flash pieces.
Advice – do 33 more. Choose the top 10-12. Frame well. Show some range. Dont get stuck on “flash” Im pretty sure tattooist are tired of people coming in with a portfolio full of flash they have already seen a million times. Be original.
Best to ya!

I think the essential point, is if the machine is hitting hard or soft… Using a soft-hitting color packer, I can work over an area a few times without getting bleeding. If I was to try the same trick with the liner, I think it would be quite a different result [/quote]
For sure…

You will see it in there. The trick is to keep it in there after you are done tattooing. Tight circles. One pass, no blood and proper depth (is that how you spell it?). If you get blood it will most likey reject the ink going in. When it scar it will also push out ink. So try to get every thing in one pass, at most two passes.
I work from the bottom up, right to left. I fill wih a 3mag or a 5mag. I noticed the 5rs or any round shader configuration left me with some gaps.

By no means Im a pro. But I was taught to crawl before I walk, and learn to walk before i run. My suggestion would be work on your lines before you start to color. Dont skip ahead, yet. The line is the base of the tattoo, it defines the tattoo, with out that base, the tattoo will fall.
Seems you have friends that have confidence in you. You want to keep that confidence, amigo.
Good luck.

Gracias! I still have lots to learn. Just started but i think the graffiti experience is really helping
I have many pictures but most of them are letters. I wish people would ask me to do more grey wash so I can practice some shading. I need to get some more range. How Do you guys get customers? Word of mouth? Shop clients? Repeat clients?
Where is everybody located? Also English is my second language so their might be some mispelled words or things might not make sense.

I get letter requests alot. So a good fine line is a must. What I have learned is to put my little finger out an touch it to the skin to anchor and I use my spare hand to stretch the skin and I almost rest my machine on my spare hand to guide. Almost always I go back when Im done filling to touchup lines.
The key here is the anchor pinky and really stretched skin for a single pass line. Also a little vasalin on my tattoo hand to help with the gliding.
