You can use tap water, but you should get in the habit of acting like the skin your practicing on is a real client. So I’d recommend using distilled anyways.
Of course in the shop I did use distilled water… Point I was trying to make is: for people struggling at home at 3am when there is no distilled water available, they…[Read more]

Oh yippee… I’ve moved on to fake skin… you all know how much I hated fake skin in the past. Yeah it still SUCKS, but I did find a little trick. Black lining ink is no problem, it is thin enough to sink in to the shitty piece of rubber – and here lies the key to color, color inks are TOO THICK for practice skin. Water it down and it works…[Read more]

Now, the first thing I did was watch the DVD, read the book etc. My first time turning on the machine (pushing the pedal) I didn’t use ink or attempt anything because it was a mechanical / engineering lesson for me. So today I decided to add fruit and ink to the equation. I made some observations the first time I used the…

Be proactive… Buy a Harley, start hanging around their hangouts and let them get to know you. They might like you and ask you to hang around, then prospect and eventually join… problem solved.

Here in my area shops all charge for apprenticeship… Why? Cause they can, and people will pay it with the dream of being on some TV tattoo reality show some day. All these TV shows are affecting the industry in many different ways, both good and bad. There are some shops charging CRAZY money too, $10,000 is highest I have heard.
Yes, I paid…[Read more]

Totally agree with Spider on wanna-be apprentices not needing to be heavily tattooed. During my interview with my mentor, I told him I had been interested in tattooing for close to 10 years and had designed tattoos for people to take to their artist and been encouraged by those same friends to get into doing tattoos myself… his response was…[Read more]

No worries, my mentor is well aware I have been researching for years and that I have my own machines and have “played around” with them off and on for a few years. The knowledge that I have picked up over the years of reading books, blogs, etc. is actually a plus, as I can have a technical based conversation with him and he sees that I understand…[Read more]

Wow sorry for the delay in updating… been a CRAZY month with the apprenticeship. TONS of drawing!!!
The first phase of training – my mentor supplied me with 50 images – not really flash images, but images he pulled from the internet of every different style tattoo (asian dragons & masks, flowers of all kinds, old school traditional, new skool,…[Read more]

Wow… when a door opens it opens WIDE.
I am officially a Tattoo Apprentice!!!!
Wasn’t looking for it, it just kinda fell into my lap. I now officially believe in FATE… As you know there wasn’t much more I could accomplish on practice skin or melons, so I bloodlined myself. 4 days later I meet an award winning tattoo artist and I am now his…[Read more]

No… it was getting tired of melons and practice skin and wanting to put needle to real skin without leaving a permanent mark due to a screw-up, going too deep, or just not being able to handle the angle or pain of doing it on my own leg. It was a test of putting what I’ve learned doing non-skin into practice on real skin (needle depth,…[Read more]

Nice… line weight looks consistent on everyone of them, don’t notice any blowouts or anything. Monster logo looks very crisp, and it appears you are building up some varying line weights on the skull. Personally I think varying line weights really add depth and dimension to a tattoo.
Awesome job!

Thanks… Yeah I will don’t worry. The reason I didn’t do it on the first line was cause I was just so amped up that I was gonna put needle to skin, I totally forgot. Once I did after first line I noticed a difference right away.

Alright I pretty much understand the bloodline concept… I will be using distilled water vs. dry needle, since it seems the distilled water would add a lube like effect to needle to some degree.
I will be doing my calf as soon as new supplies arrive and will post pics.
