The picture is actually taken quite close up but in order to load it to the site I had to change the file size which makes the picture very small looking.is there another way to do it?I took the pic with my iPhone and then emailed it to my laptop and then loaded it from there but had to change it’s size any suggetions would be great

Its easy man, I dont like the “picture size limit” sh!t here .. So I usually just upload it to Facebook or use any free image hosting sites like Imageshack.us

then simply post the link here in your thread that leads to your pic!

did this one on my buddy tough one to pull off with little to no experiance but it was free skin and he wanted me to do it let me know what u think thanks

Looks good but I doubt you have NO experience. Im almost sure you have been practicing at least a few months and are now posting your “better pieces” now that you have gotten confident in your work. Someone with NO experience at all would not be doing a design like this, this I know, also if you have no experience then you wouldnt be wrapping up tats and doing things that pro’s and people in shops do.

No offence, your definitely good, but Im just having a hard time believing you just picked up a tattoo gun and went at some skin and this is the result. I Call BS, it takes practice to build up the muscles needed in your hand to hold the gun steady, correctly, and comfortably that way you can lay nice smooth lines. Someone with NO experience does NOT have the necessary hand muscles to hold a tattoo gun steady and correctly. It takes time and practice…

Good work, Blaze. Big step forward, for sure.

Looks like your theater masks have a pretty good amount of blowouts. (but the lines look like a HUGE improvement) 2 things typically cause that. Either going too deep with the needle, or holding it at too great an angle. (I did this a few weeks ago so the lesson is fresh in my mind)

From what I can tell the stars look solid, nice work.

My one criticism would be the blue in the masks…why is it there? When I first started I wanted to be tattooing so bad that I actually would just keep putting crap in my tattoos because I didn’t want to let go of the machine. Now I take time to just stop and stare for a while before I add a new element. It usually saves me from myself.

Also I recently started using the Diamond Cut Tips and setting my needle a TINY bit past the tube tip, and now working off the tip if my needle, rather than working off the tip of the tube. This requires manually holding the needle at the right depth but has made it 10000%’s easier to watch where Im laying my lines and if my needle is at a 45 like its suppose to be..

I think the lines just seem “blown out” because it is a 15-16yr old cover up that was soooo faded, it was originally the theater masks still but so distorted/;faded and blurry you couldnt tell what it was, just looked like a blob full of colors and black lines lol… wish I had the before/after pic

Well the theater masks are a 15yr old coverup: they were done on my moms leg when I was about 9-10yrs old (im 24 now lol) it was SOOO faded you couldnt even tell what it was…. I think thats why some of the lines look that way.

The blue was already there so i had to cover it with something, ya know?

any tips to make it look better would be greatly appreciated..!!

definitely better, just need to work more on the shading. the stars look solid from what i can see. like said fade them up to center line of each point and it will add dimension…..nice job. a little advise goes a long way….

      Yes sir it does!

      Thanks a lot man!

Im definitely getting better and getting better criticism from my past few pieces..
Ive been keeping it more simple for now, and yes I know my main focus /issue is shading. I will continue to work hard at this!

Thanks troubled your advice and texans advice has helped me in so many ways! You guys have inspired me greatly and now I am getting better!

I also bought A new LCD digital power supply. I had a real cheap analog one/. The new one I have has wayyyy more settings and such and now I can run my machines on MUCHHH lower voltage compared to my crappy started kit power supply!!

It even has two machine slots: one for a liner and one for a shader, and a switch to go back and forth from shading to lining mode. This power supply has drastically improved my overall work!!

      Thanks!

you are not shading. You are throwing different values of black anywhere you want. This is the dimension Troubled is talking about.

You are making the same mistakes over and over…this isn’t learning, this is making mistakes over and over. You should show a progression…you should be able to exhibit that you understand your mistakes and then act on that knowledge by not making them again. Right now you’ve only shown that you can do what you’ve always done and get what you’ve always gotten.

You have A LOT to learn about why you shade…not just the action of doing it. I suggest you youtube as many videos as you can about shading in drawing, not tattoos. You’ll get a much better understanding of why, and how shading affects a piece of work.

Lay out all 20 times you practiced on that skull I gave you…put them on your floor and post the picture. When I see that, I’m back on board with helping.

Ok well it seems like people here tell people like this “deuces” guy with completely scratchy looking lines and shit that he is doing “great” and so on.. But I post clean line work, and just have issues with shading my dimensions to make them “pop”. I am aware of my issue. but ill be damned if u sit here and try to convince me that this last piece I did isnt better than ALL the others Ive posted here. Its not finished and still has a lot of work, but to me it looks 10x’s better than the “clown” or other joker piece I did. Lining AND shading..

Im just gonna go on my own, cuz even if I have ONLY a 1% increase in my work then it makes a difference TO ME. But it seems like since i didnt 10000% grasp your advice of shading and perfect it, I just get very shitty criticism..

BUT you tell people that THIS shit like this in the attachment is good?!? Really tho?

hope it’s going to turn out better on the next session. i only see 2 tones in the piece, black, and med-light grey. there is no dimension to it at all. you can’t expect anyone to take it easy, when you dont listen to advise…

Actually there is 3 different tones and its not finished. Im using a nokia phone to take pictures. “Im suppose to get a better pic today. I KNOW my shading needs work dude and ive been takin ur advice. I took my time and spend almost 4 hours trying to put the different tones of dark and light in this piece. I mean seriously tho, this is a LITTLE better compared to the ones i did BEFORE ur advice man… I have no mentor or tutor, its trial and error for me, and its not like im wrecking these pieces beyond fixing / adding more tones/ dimension to it right?

I mean ive looked around at others beginners FIRST pieces and I am way better off than quite a few. I havent even been doin this for 2weeks yet…

I know this is a LONG process and is gonna take time.but to make me feel like I have absolutely NO IMPROVEMENTS compared to the last pieces I posted is a bit drastic I might say? I am no where near perfect or even close to where I want to be, but I still feel I have a little bit of improvement since the VERY FIRST piece I posted here man..

I mean im gonna keep trying. Ive been doing the 5 cup “greywash”method as well. 4drops of ink -3 drops of ink- 2drops-1 drop- then fill the rest of the cap with water .. YOu cant see the tones cuz of the low quality cam man. I SWEAR im trying a LOT HARDER with my shading man..

Oh well.. Im still not giving up, i dont care how shitty my work looks , everyone has to learn/ start somewhere.

alot better, but your transitions from dark to light need to be smoother. alot of your shade work in the face looks to be the same tone. im not sure what the stuff around the face is supposed to be. try this exercise; lay your pencil at more of a 20 degree angle with your paper, pressing firmly move the pencil back and forth about 1″ – 1 1/2″ wide and gradually lighten the pressure as you go until you basically have lifted the pencil from the paper. you should have a nice even transition from dark to light. now try this technique on a very simple design, like draw a circle, and using this technique make that circle look like a ball. i know this sounds stupid, and is shit you get taught in elementary school, but its the simple basics that get you there. when drawing, remember everything is a shape. when shading everything has a point where light hits, a point that is dark, reflected light, and a shadow. it sounds more confusing then it is. in order to tattoo, you should be able to draw, trace, and copy an image. you have the ability to become a tattooist, but need to improve your capability of becomeing a good tattooist.

      Thanks very much!

The drawing above was done with nothing but a mechanical pencil lol. I dont have many pencils but a few. I have more shades of ink and variety of needles. Maybe I will do the 5 ink cup grey wash technigue and just shoot this piece on myself instead of someone else. As you know I have only myself a few friends and some CRAP rubber “practice skin”(junkkkk)

SO I think I will put this on my thigh or leg or something and then try to fade my darks to a light greywash color.

Keep the tips and advice coming.

This place and the members here have helped me SO much so far!
