Spider replied to the topic Thought I'd share….Grey wash formula… in the forum Pigment vs. Ink 11 years, 5 months ago
yeah the dropper comes in very handy in my booth, for mixing I use a single 1rl, tear the needle off so i don’t poke myself, then use the loop to “spin” it in the ink cap to mix any new colors or my washes. Tried one of those auto mixers once….ONCE!!!!!!

Spider replied to the topic Stenciling Question in the forum Design Ideas / Technique 11 years, 6 months ago
In a shop I worked at in Texas the owner was such a cheap a….. they wouldn’t shell out the money for a thermal. So we did our own research going from the old Brothers fax machine idea to make stencils. And found that a dot matrix printer (you can get an older one for under 100,) will make a very decent stencil copy. Otherwise you are stuck to…[Read more]

Spider replied to the topic Back piece setup in the forum Design Ideas / Technique 11 years, 6 months ago
Most back pieces I have done I did the main design stenciled and made sure when I applied the stencil to the area it was drier than normal and very tacky. Lay it slowly if the person (or the piece) is in a curve of the spine or if they have very bony shoulder blades. Depending on the piece you may have the person bend over at the waist placing…[Read more]

I probably won’t get any of the stuff back and just consider it a loss, he didn’t get anything but a handmade lightbox (my cheap one to boot) and some other smaller stuff anyway. I am fully expecting to see his garbage attempts at tattooing popping up soon anyway, I heard he went and got him an ebay kit since he was an apprentice for a whole 2…[Read more]

I use a regular office fax machine :PSerious?
How does that work?
first you print your design backwards. this is because you will be printing on the back of the stencil sheet not the front like normal
then you take your stencil sheet and cut it to the size of your design
toss the onion…[Read more] -

My shader runs at 51% duty, and I used weaved mags :)
Curved mags are arguably better since they are curved and shape to the skin better, and you can use them on angles and such. i am just used to my weaved mags so i stick to what works :) -

I usually set up a few cups for my work. I also use Kuro Sumi outlining ink.
Cup 1: 100% ink
Cup 2: 50% ink, 2 drops of witch hazel, distilled water
Cup 3: 25% Ink, 3 drops of witch hazel, distilled water
Cup 4: 4 drops of ink, 4 drops of witch hazel, distilled waterYou could also use your intenze shading solution instead of witch hazel :)

Your eagle and dagger look more new school than traditional. Traditional designs are very specific with how they are drawn. They arent warped, or curved, or exaggerated in any way.
notice the difference between this eagle and yours?

yours looks more cartoony than this one

A nice big piece JJ! :)
Looks pretty good. I think the big issue with the Melon is it doesnt “heal” like normal skin. A lot of the times your lighter shades will actually go in dark, and lighten as the tattoo heals. What are you using for your light shades? How much black? are you using Witch Hazel? Distilled water? :) -

I’d have to say that with the exception of just bad quality crappy ink, the ink you end up picking is as varied in some cases as the parts you use. Just because some people “swear” by one brand or another doesn’t mean much. I hit an economical speedbump and at the same time had an issue with almost all my basic colors. I ended up…

My recommendation is Honeydew Melons. They are in my opinion the best alternative to human skin. Practice skin is also very difficult to stretch, and doesnt resemble tattooing human skin at all. Honeydew Melon has the closest resemblance to human skin in the fruit world. It’s very good to practice with.

From what I’ve read it seems it’s a skin cleanser and antiseptic. however I’m not sure how it would work with open wounds during a tattoo. i didnt find any references to it being used during the tattoo process.
