There is nothing realistic about the light source…but I wasn’t going for realism on this one. Just good old black and color…they’ll peel this thing off me 100 years after I’m dead. :D

Nearly everything in life is easier to learn if you have a mentor, teacher, coach, etc. I firmly believe this because the average person doesn’t know what they don’t know. Myself included.
If you look at my work, I’ve progressed quite a bit in the last year. But I am still LIGHT YEARS away from where I need to be. If I had taken that same…[Read more]

TexasPT replied to the topic how much cost of Worst Tattoo Machines ? in the forum Worst Tattoo Machines 12 years ago
You can find most of the element Elite series for $15 on Amazon. :)
If you see a $100 machine you like, do your homework. Chances are it isn’t a $100 machine. And It won’t show up tuned. “Liner/Shader” is code for we get these mass produced and you need to figure out what it’s for because we’re not sure.

Thanks Mark. Appreciate the comments. Yeah it was my first time using and 11 round liner and took a while to get used to.
And the original design was pretty boring. No shading was ever added to it. But I am hoping to spruce it up a little. I’m also thinking of putting colour in the snake head as well. Maybe greens or browns/yellows. Also was…[Read more]

Stick around and ask questions.
I’ve been at this only about a year and a half but I’ve picked up an awful lot of theory and have been in a lot of situations making mistakes. :) The old saying, “those who can’t, teach” applies pretty well in my situation.
I’m happy to see this forum coming back to life. For me, anyway, this kind of interaction…[Read more]

TexasPT replied to the topic wave (not happy with) in the forum Post your work here 12 years ago
the way to look at it is, HOW would you go at it if you had to do it again right now?
You have a couple spots where your lines got real thick…why? How can you fix it?
Why didn’t you bring the blue up more? Did you have a reference photo? Why didn’t you follow it?
This is how I go at every tattoo I do. I pick it apart, and look for mistakes…[Read more]

TexasPT replied to the topic 8 coil machines (liner) or 10 coil shader. in the forum Apprentice Folly 12 years ago
I hope you didn’t pay $40 for that machine…that is a $5 machine.
more wraps simply means more resistance…the longer it takes for electricity to get through the coils. They won’t make a machine stronger, or hit harder…the more layers typically just a slower running machine. Shaders, compared to liners, are typically running fewer cycles…[Read more]

Cool to be able to do a tribute like that. I’m doing a tree of life this week for a client whose mother passed recently.
Are you working off the needle or the tube? You have a lot of lines that seem real inconsistent. Not sure if it’s a depth issue that requires you to go back over them or if you are not stretching well enough. I have a…[Read more]

I’d say that ‘s pretty solid.
Like Mike, I think shading needs a little help. You have washes, but no gradients. I don’t think it’s a killer for the tattoo…because the tattoo looks nice. I just think it would have been better with some dark to light transitions.
I dig it.

Off to a great start, Ben.
One thing you can notice is that your hand speed changed a lot during the tattoo. Line width varies in places…nothing major but seems worth pointing out since we’re all trying to get better here.
I say go for shading/scales. The original design is real flat. I think if you go a little artistic on it and shade in…[Read more]

Forums like this with active membership do wonders with progression. The did for me, anyway. Cool to see my first next to one of my more recent. :)
