Round shaders tend to make it a lot easier to overwork the skin which in turn can cause more scabbing. The way a round shader group is set and works is more condensed than with a flat mag. This can make it seem easier faster packing color in, but it also means you’re hitting a smaller area of skin with more needles which equals more damage. I try…[Read more]

  • Yeah someone probably is tattooing and I could probably set up shop once I got there, but I’m a senior NCO. Getting busted tattooing by some asshat that doesn’t like them and is a stickler on policy/regulations while in Korea would be bad for me. Rather not take the chance of having to deal with that.

By shading I’m assuming you’re meaning the inside of the lettering to make it solid black so that’s what I’m going off of here. You said half inch tall thin script letters, me personally I would even set up a shading machine. A tight 7 rd liner or a regular 5 rd liner will do the line work and fill (sculpt) the letters so that they are filled…[Read more]

Well I’m still working on the machine building guide, but looks like it’ll be on hold for a year or so. I just came down on orders to do a year in Korea and found out that even though Korea finally implemented tattoo laws, regulations and sanitation standards, all tattoo studios in Korea are off limits to military personell. It’s going to be a long…[Read more]

  • posted this same thing in your other “machine or just me”, hope it helps.

Alot of new tattooers run into this problem and I know I did, the issue is typically a mental thing. You have your head wrapped around this piece of art you’re doing and you’re really excited to be doing it which makes you think you should be just rolling through this…[Read more]

  • I’ve got the Hurricane and a Danny Fowler digital power supply (no digital read out on the Fowler just the power up and down buttons). They”re both great, but the Hurricane I was able to pick up on clearance at an Amazon.com shop for $49.00, less than half the price of the Fowler. I’ve been using the Hurrican ever since. I like being able to…[Read more]

  • Randy I know what you mean, if it wasn’t for being so close (six years) to retirement I’d probably be considering getting out and tattooing full time. I can’t be considered a pro because I don’t work out of a shop and didn’t have what I guess could or would be considered a technical apprenticeship. I’ve had a few guys working in shops give me…[Read more]

  • Tarantula has the right idea, if you can get them to sit and wait for about thirty minutes plastic wrap shouldn’t be a problem. Once the customer leave the shop you have no control of how long they have that wrap on, that’s why we give them care sheets and tell them what to do before they leave. Wrapping a tattoo for days after getting it I…[Read more]

  • Thanks folks, I’m going to check out deviant and just keep drawing until she likes something. I’ve tried the candle which I thought looked great, but it’s a no go as is any sort of banner. My wife is the pickiest client I’ve ever had, LOL.

    Thanks,

I use prismacolor verithin red pencils for sketching, mainly just because I can do really light lines and be messy then dark in the lines I want to keep so when I put it on a light table to transfer it to an ink drawing I can see the dark lines only and have my design tweaked to where I want it. Prismacolor stuff is great, they’re the…[Read more]

  • Have to agree with everyone, sounds like a coil or capacitor problem. 12v does sound high to me, but I’m not going to say it’s too high. The voltage people run their machines at completely depends on that person and how they tune their machine. I will say that I’ve found that running machines at lower voltages lets you work longer and in my…[Read more]

  • If he’s dead set on getting something there even though he may still go up and down in weight and get more stretch marks then obviously he’s going to get it. I would advise him on the facts that there’s no telling what it’s going to do if he changes sizes and gets more stretch marks. The concern I would have with doing tribal in this situation is…[Read more]

  • OK I’ve been searching all day and can’t find the article, I know I have it around here somewhere. I think it was an interview with Horiyoshi III, either way I know it was one of the well known Japanese artists. I think it’s a great idea though, it would definitely give someone and idea of what their machines felt like to clients.

  • I’ve done it and in my experience it was somewhat like tattooing over a scar, but somewhat less of a worry. I wouldn’t worry too much about tattooing over them as long as you’re careful and really light handed getting through them. You still have to get the ink in so as you know if you go to light it won’t take. My recommendation would be tell…[Read more]

  • Why does it seem like I always type a book in here, sorry about that last rant guys.

  • There are about 8 of the guys I used to hang out with in high school in the 80’s that are now very successful tattoo artists and I don’t think any of them had what today would be considered a traditional apprenticeship. I was the first one that tried to get into it back then and it was so closed I had no luck and after having the door shut in my…[Read more]

  • I’ve never thought about just pulling the o-ring under and going, sounds interesting I’m going to have to try that. I have a Baltimore Irons machine I got at the Richmond convention a few years ago and it’s a nice machine, but the first thing I did was replace the springs. The springs that were on it just weren’t cooperative with me in the whole…[Read more]

  • Thanks man, I love this forum. The tattoo business used to be so closed and difficult to get any information about I’m just glad to see some folks willing to share and help people out, I think it’s awesome.
